What happens when a gamer-who-totally-has-a-girlfriend (Gamer) tries to get their non-gaming girlfriend (GF) to play Borderlands 2? Continue reading

The New Currency: Short Arms and Long Pockets
Robert Florence wrote a column over a week ago justifying games piracy (in short: “I want it, can take it for free, so that means doing so is okay”) which ended on one of the most hilarious concepts I’ve heard in a while – a new currency for gaming. Direct from the source: “The past … Continue reading
Point / Counterpoint: Why Developers Don’t Talk To Gaming “Journalists”
Kotaku: C’mon developers, talk to us more. You can trust us. Open up. PA Report: And when you do, you can be sure we’ll spin things to attract as many eyeballs as possible.
Great Moments in Game Advertising – Adbot, Social Commentator (#E3)
When even the Adbot is casting judgement, it is time to consider the issue. Continue reading
Great MMO Studio Collapses of Our Time – 38 Studios
So, what’s the take-out here? Obviously the market conditions that 38 Studios launched with in 2006 were very different to those it expired under in 2012, with investors no longer interested in pouring tens of millions of dollars into MMO development. But it’s not like 38 Studios should have been strapped for cash – as identified, they had at least US$135m put into the studio. Yes, they got a single player title out, but it fell a long way short of the initial “broad media” dreams, or even releasing the promised MMO, while burning a lot of cash. Continue reading
Great Moments in Game Advertising – Lara Croft And The Sphere of PR Disaster
In games advertising, self-administered wounds are becoming increasingly rare. As the games industry matures, there is at least some sense that what developers say to games journalists reporters is going to go to a wide, mainstream audience, so if something stupid is said a lot of people are going to hear it. Which is why … Continue reading
Point / Counterpoint: The Role of Women at Modern Gaming Events
Kotaku covers it succinctly: If you’re a woman and outside of those things, well, you just don’t really fit. If I was being extra picky, I’d say the image used for the ‘positive take’ of women in gaming shows a lot of leg on a woman with an hourglass figure who’s reached the top of … Continue reading
38 Studios: Striking Out
Concluding my previous look at 38 Studios and possibly how all the money got spent is the news that 38 Studios has shut down, laid everyone off (including the Big Huge Games team) and will likely now be carved up and sold in order for Rhode Island to possibly get some money back. There’s an … Continue reading
Embers of Caerus: If I’m Snarky About Kickstarter, At Least I’m Consistent
Another day, another Kickstarter in the gaming “press” (which loves it, let’s be honest – it’s super-easy content to write regardless what happens). What caught my eye about the Embers of Caerus Kickstarter is that it is so that a group of 50 volunteer, amateur developers can develop an investor prototype that may eventually be … Continue reading
Point / Counterpoint: Sexual Stereotyping and Android Demonstration Videos
VG24/7 (thanks to Good Games Writing for highlighting it) an article about sexism in video games / video games ‘journalism‘, with the key point being that although it goes on, both developers and writers have the ability to reduce latent sexism by not focusing on the obvious T&A presented to them. All it takes for … Continue reading
